In 2021, during a heat wave, Lis & Livie drove down to Edison, WA for a paper lantern making workshop with artist Julie Paschkis in the Edison Granary Building. This was one of the workshops that got us thinking about the types of classes we wanted to host on our farm. At the beginning of the class Julie shared images and books full of patterns for students to choose from if they wanted some inspiration. After some experimentation on test paper, everyone got to work with their scissors, exacto knives, awls, and rivets, to create their unique lanterns. Some students created intricate stories with the scenes they depicted on their lanterns, others were free-form and organic, some were animal themed. We came out of the class inspired, relaxed, and ready to make more lanterns at home. We both loved the class and knew we wanted to host a workshop on the farm with Julie. Luckily she agreed and we’re very excited to have her here in October!
In this class, students will make simple paper lanterns out of archival rag paper, using scissors, exacto knives and awls to make patterns. The lanterns can be purely decorative or narrative. We will approach the project playfully and inspire one another. All supplies and materials will be provided. Please bring an image of a pattern that you like.
The Setting
The workshop will take place in our newly renovated barn studio, full of natural light and located right beside the flower garden and farm stand. Students can take time before or after class to explore the farm, nearby beaches, forested trails, and wildlife that Lummi Island offers.
Coffee, tea, and breakfast pastries will be provided. Please bring a bag lunch.
